The Best Kept Behind the Scenes Secret in an Emergency Room There are many different types of emergency medicine jobs. One of the emergency room's best kept secrets lies in the position held by an emergency room assistant. Proper medical training is required in order to become an emergency room assistant. Some hospitals offer this training after the individual has been hired while other hospitals require prior training such as successful completion of an emergency medical technician program or medical assistant program. When a patient enters the ER a few things must be completed immediately. An initial set of patient vital signs, blood pressure, pulse, breathing rate, and temperature, need taken upon arrival. Information about the complete medical history, list of current patient medications, and allergies are gathered by the emergency assistant and plays an important role in the diagnoses and treatment of every patient. Various tests can also be performed by the emergency room assistant. Drawing a patient's blood for testing in the laboratory and obtaining EKG readings which allow a doctor to determine the patient's heart rhythm are among the tests which an emergency assistant can complete. Helping the patients is the priority of every medical professional. The emergency assistant has the ability to assist patients with activities that the patients are too ill or injured to perform such as assistance to the bathroom or help with meals. The assistant in an ER acts as an extra set of hands for the nurses and doctors and can complete duties assigned to them by a nurse or physician. Transportation is another duty that can be performed by the emergency assistant. When a patient being seen in the ER is admitted as a patient up on the hospital floor, the emergency room assistant may be asked to transport the patient to the room in the hospital where the patient will stay. The assistant escorts the patient, either on the bed or by wheelchair, along with the patient's medical chart and personal belongings up to the room assigned to the patient. The emergency room assistants help to keep the emergency room running like a find oiled machine. Often found behind the scenes, they perform skills and duties that are an essential part of patient care.
